The Effects of Water Sports on the Body

Like many others, I spent my Christmas Break enjoying the sun and water at the Dam. What I noticed is really troubling, many people were sustaining injuries from all the water sports they were enjoying. I couldn’t help but cringe at some of the falls, anticipating the back, neck and other muscle and joint pain that comes with impact. All impact has an effect on the body, but these high energy, hard impacts from hitting the water can really put a jolt through your system. Even some of the most seemingly harmless water sports can trigger pain. What injuries can be sustained? Swimmers shoulder - Swimmer’s shoulder is the most common injury in swimming. It can be caused by bad technique, excessive or quickly increased workloads or the use of swim paddles and pull buoys. Neck Injuries - The neck is very mobile, and this is why certain precautions must be taken to avoid injuries. Neck injuries are often due to incorrect technique. Lower back injuries - lower back injuries are also often due to incorrect technique. While swimming front crawl, you may swim with high head position and your hips and legs sink. As a consequence, you may be kicking hard to keep the legs up and be overarching the back. These injuries can be either acute (such as sprains, strains and abrasions) as well as overuse injuries (such as rotator cuff injury). How can Orange Bowen Therapy help? Bowen is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation. The bowen technique is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly and for any musculoskeletal or related neuromuscular complaint. It is a holistic treatment that treats the whole person and aims to treat the cause of problems, rather than the symptoms.
